The Best Christmas Plays Take You On A Journey…
Christmas plays and Children’s Christmas musicals were meant to be like A Mouse Christmas! Now you can see why… Nearly the entire script is here for your review. (We’ve left out a few lines, a couple of short scenes and a lot of directors notes that you get with the full script).
All you have to do is read along and click on the photos and the songs (click the player buttons as they come up in the script). So turn down the lights, cuddle up with a steaming cup of coffee or hot chocolate and follow along, as we give you just a taste of…
…Lights fade in on Mouse Family Fireplace scene. Papa Mouse is hidden behind his large evening paper and when bedtimes comes, the little mice have nice diversionary tactic…
“Papa, would you tell us one of your wonderful bedtime stories?” asked Marsha Mouse.
“Yes Papa, you tell the best stories.” agreed Missy Mouse.
“Hmmmm, that sounds like a good idea”. Said Papa Mouse. “All right little mice, gather around and get comfortable. This is not going to be just another story tonight. This story really happened to your mother and I.”
“Wow, really Papa?” asked Missy Mouse
“Really Mamma?” asked Marsha Mouse
“That’s right little ones”. Mama Mouse assured them. ” It’s all true. We were there when it happened. Listen closely and we’ll tell you all about it.”
After Mama Mouse sings the first verse of every mouse’s favorite bedtime song, “Christmas Lullaby”, Papa Mouse begins…
Christmas Lullaby
Close your eyes, rest for awhile,
take a journey with me.
To a cool night, scattered with starlight,
one shines brighter than all.
“A long, long, time ago, when your mother and I were very young mice, we started our first household in a lovely little home with a human, but respectable, Jewish couple.”
“Weren’t you afraid, Mamma?” Asked Murry Mouse
“Of course not little mousey,” calmed Mama Mouse, “These were very tame humans and they left cheese for us every other day.”
“Their names were Joseph and Mary,” continued Papa Mouse, “but that is getting a little ahead of the story. You see, at first we lived with Mary’s family, for she was not yet married to Joseph. Well, one morning after breakfast, the most amazing thing happened”…
“How will this be, since I am a virgin?” Asked Mary.
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you, so the holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. For nothing is impossible with God.”
Mary Replied, “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.” (Fade out angel music)
“Mary told these things to Joseph”, explained Papa Mouse, “who didn’t believe her until the angel came to him in a dream and confirmed all that she had said. Joseph trusted God and still took Mary as his wife, even though she was carrying a baby.”
Mama Mouse continued, “Months went by, and Mary was almost ready to give birth to God’s Son, Jesus.”
“But at that time, added Papa, the ruler of Rome, Caesar Augustus, commanded that a census be taken of all the people in the land, each by his place of birth.
“What’s a census?” Asked Murray Mouse
“It’s where you count all the people.” Half whispered Marsha.
The Roman soldier continued, “…All subjects of the mighty Roman Empire shall return to their home cities and towns to be counted. As Cesar has commanded, so be it!
“Joseph was a descendant of King David of Bethlehem, explained Papa mouse, so he took Mary with him there to be counted.”
“Couldn’t they file late, like you always do with your taxes, Papa?” asked Murray.
Laughingly, Mama Mouse explained, “Back then, there weren’t any forms to fill out and mail in. They had to go to Bethlehem, and of course we went with them.”
“How far is Bethlehem, papa?”
Father Mouse: “Very far away Missy – over 75 human miles, through winding mountain passes and hot deserts.”
“Wow!” cried all the little mice.
“How did you get there?” asked Marsha.
“It must have taken all day.” said Missy.
“It must have taken all year.” speculated Marvin.
“No wonder you and Mommy are so old.” realized Murray.
“Oh no, my little Squeakers” answered Papa Mouse. “It only took three days and we didn’t even have to walk.”
“That’s right! confirmed Mama Mouse. “We just climbed into one of the camel’s bags and rode through the hills and deserts to Bethlehem.”
“Was it hard to find Bethlehem?” asked Marvin.
“It’s hard to say,” said Mama with a pause. “I think that we were lost several times, but Joseph kept insisting that he knew the way.”
“Just like you, Papa!” said Murray
All little mice giggled.
“Why didn’t you just take the freeway?” Marsha asked.
“There weren’t any freeways back then, Marsha” answered Papa. “In fact, they didn’t even have much of a road.”
No Road To Bethlehem
Biblical note: Who would have guessed that traveling could be such… work! Well it can be if you’re riding on the back of a camel across scorching hot deserts and freezing cold nights! Getting there is more than half the battle!
Through the blazing sun,
and the cold, cold nights,
I will take my rest,
in your pure true light.
Past the wind blown sand,
to a distant land,
I will daily pray,
and by your side I’ll stay.
I’m on the no, road, to Bethlehem,
keepin’ cool as I can.
I’m on the no, road, to Bethlehem,
and I hope you like sand.
‘tween the lofty peaks,
when your thunder speaks,
I will take Thy wing,
to cover over me.
I’m on the no, road, to Bethlehem,
keepin’ cool as I can.
I’m on the no, road, to Bethlehem,
and I hope you like sand.
Don’t know where I’m goin’,
don’t know how to get there,
don’t know where I’m stayin’,
if I should arrive.
Don’t think I can make it,
don’t think I can take it,
don’t know why it’s so hot,
I hope I survive
I’m on the no, road, to Bethlehem,
keepin’ cool as I can.
I’m on the no, road, to Bethlehem,
and I hope you like sand!
Mama Mouse picks up the story after the song, “When we finally reached Bethlehem, we found that all the Inns were full. Back then it was hard to make reservations, so a lot of times, you just had to hope there would be room.”
“With Mary about to give birth to the baby Jesus, Joseph had to find someplace to stay.” said Papa Mouse.
Lights: Fade-out fireplace scene and follow spot up on stage right for Joseph, Mary, and first Inn.
Note: Each Innkeeper has a sign with the name of their Inn on it (Bethlehem Hilton, Copa-Banana, Lazy Palm, and the Bethlehem Bungalow). The signs can be held up in front of the innkeeper’s face as a closed door. Joseph knocks on the sign and then the door is opened by lowering the sign. When the Innkeeper closes or slams the door, they simply raise it back up to cover their face. If you don’t wish to use the sound effects CD, a sound effect can be made off stage for the slamming sound. As each Innkeeper slams the door in Joseph’s face, turn off the spotlight and then turn it on again at the following Inn, or leave the light on and have Joseph walk to each one in turn. (Joseph knocks on the door of the Innkeeper of the Bethlehem Hilton three times.)
Joseph knocks on the first Innkeeper’s door, and when it he greets them. “Good evening, My wife and I are looking for lodging. She is with child and we have traveled all day. We are very tired.”
The Innkeeper of the Bethlehem Hilton responds to Joseph in a rather stuffy sounding English accent, “Yes sir. What name is your reservation under?”
“Reservation?” replied Joseph, “We couldn’t make a reservation.”
“I am sorry sir”, said the innkeeper, “but all our rooms have been reserved for months. We simply do not have a place for you. Good evening.”
(Joseph knocks three times on the next door, The Copa-Banana)
Joseph: “Good Evening. My wife and I are looking for lodging. She is with child and we have traveled all day. We are very tired.”
2nd Innkeeper: “What’s the matter, can’t you read the sign? No Va-can-see! See?” (Points to the sign, then slams the door shut)
(Joseph knocks three times on the next door, The Lazy Palm)
Joseph: “Good Evening. My wife and I are looking for lodging. She is with child and we have traveled all day. We are very tired.”
3rd Innkeeper: (angrily) “Huh! I saw you traipsing all over town, asking everybody else for a room, and then you come here last. The nerve! Forget it, Bub, we’re full!” (Innkeeper slams door in Joseph’s face).
Tell Me Why?
Note: Why is it that just when you think you are doing what God wants you to do, things start to fall apart? Get an insight to the powerful faith that Joseph exercised by trusting the Lord when everything in his life goes from terrible to worse! Joseph attempts to find lodging at three popular Bethlehem establishments but quickly learns that there is no rooms available anywhere in town. Listen in on Joseph’s little conversation with God…
As Joseph begins to pray, we quickly realize that he is at the end of his rope. “Lord, prays Joseph, You know I’ve always trusted You. But when this whole pregnancy thing came up I told you it was a bad idea.
I told you that no one would believe it, let alone understand it!
But I did as you asked anyway. And then we had to travel all the way here with Mary being pregnant. Not very good timing, I might add.
And did you have a place for Mary and I and Your Son to stay?… Well?… Are you even listening?”
“What am I doing here!?…”
Where are You and why am I,
here beneath cold midnight skies?
I have searched throughout the town,
there’s no shelter to be found.
I have always told my friends
how You’ll save me in the end.
I’ve responsibilities.
Please don’t let my family freeze.
And if You call me, I will come.
if You need me, I will run.
Oh I will serve You ’till die,
all I ask Lord, is tell me why?
Tell me why?
I don’t really understand
why You trouble just this man.
I don’t want to seem a pest,
but my family needs a rest.
Now I’m just hangin’ by a thread,
for I’ve been searchin’ for a bed.
Tho’ my feet follow me like lead,
I will trust you ’til I’m dead.
if You call me, I will come.
if You need me, I will run.
Oh I will serve You ’till die,
all I ask Lord, is tell me why?
Tell me why?
Not until after Joseph expresses his frustration, fear, and ultimately his serving faith, does God lead him to the last place he would ever wish to stay – the Bethlehem Bungalow which was very likely a cave. Here among the fleas and animals of a stable, Joseph and Mary take shelter for the night…
Joseph had given up trying to find a place when he sensed the Lord speak to him. “What?” Asked Joseph. “But I already asked everywhere… Down that road? But I… All right Lord, if you say so.”
Joseph finally knocks three times on the last door, The Bethlehem Bungalow, He turns immediately away and says, “I told You so!”
As he starts to walk away. His expression changes to as God prompts him to know again. Joseph says, “What?… Lord!, Oh, all right.” Joseph goes back to the door and knocks again and again… and finally there is an answer).
After what seems like an inordinate amount of racket, the Innkeeper of the Bethlehem Bungalow finally begins to answer from behind the door, with a very sleepy voice says
“Yes? Yes… Just a minute…. I’m coming… (Open the door with creaking sound), “Yes’r? What can I do for you?” (Spoken with a strong “back-woods, southern” accent. Note: Innkeeper begins by scratching – mostly likely because he has fleas from all his animals!)
Joseph is not very hopeful, but he asks anyway, “Good evening. My wife and I are looking for lodging. She is with child and we have traveled all day. We’re very tired.”
“I’m sorry Mister, said the innkeeper, but with the census going on and all, we’re so full that my wife and I are sleepin’ in the livin’ room so some folks can stay in our bed.” (A bit more scratching)
Joseph, almost pleadingly asks, “Isn’t there any place we can go? My wife must have rest!”
After a bit more scratching the innkeeper gets an idea, “All I’ve got is the stable and cave out back. It ain’t much but the straw makes a right comfortable mattress, if’n you can take the fleas. You’re welcome to stay for nothin’ if’n you like.” (Scratches yet again!)
“Yes! Joseph replied, “Thank you very much sir! (Start scratching’) God bless you!” (Pause for door to close) “And God protect us!” (Joseph is now scratching in several places while going off stage).
Lights: Fade-out as Joseph goes to tell Mary the good news. Fade-in on fireplace scene.
Mother leans over to the mouse children and says, “Later, our good friend, Ba-Ba Lamb-Kins, told us what happened to him and his shepherds in the hills of Bethlehem.”
Lights: Fade-out on fireplace scene, fade in on the shepherds and sheep.
Music: Night Ambient Sound Bed, (Music Disk track 4) This plays all the way through the scene, until sheep are done, and next song starts.
Lights go down as Joseph and Mary finally find shelter, then come up again to reveal shepherds tending their flock and talking in the hills… Play night sounds of wind and crickets…
“Look how bright that star is over there on the horizon,” exclaims the first shepherd.
“I have heard rumor down in the lowlands that soon something wonderful is going to happen,” shares the second shepherd.
“Yes I’ve heard similar things. It’s like there is a feeling in the air.
(Pause)
“I have also heard that there are Wise Men passing through the villages. They say that they have seen a sign from God and that a King shall be born.”
Suddenly some angels appear with good news!
“Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy, which will be for all people. For today in the City of David, Bethlehem, there is born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. If you go now, you will find this baby wrapped in cloths and laying in a manger.”
After the shepherds recover the decide to go see this amazing event.
“Hurry, Let us go the Bethlehem and see this wonderful thing that the Lord has told us!”
As the shepherds run out of the light and off stage, the light remain on some very adorable little sheep, who have been grazing under the care of their shepherds… one sheep, Lamb Chops, keeps getting distracted by something off to the side, and frequently stops eating and stares over at it.
“What are you going to do when you grow up, Mutton? asked BaBa Lambkins.
“Hum…” said Mutton, “I think that God is calling me to pasture.”
Jeffy Lamb suddenly gets an inspiration and says with a superior tone, “When I grow up, I want to be a sacrifice!”
You’re so idealistic, Jeffy! replies Mutton.
(Pause)
Fluffy’s curiosity finally gets the better of him and he asks Lamb Chops, “What do you keep looking at, Chops?” (While looking in the same direction)
All the Lambs look up and over to see what Chops is looking at.
Chops “It looks greener over there.”
“We just came from over there!” said Fluffy, with a little frustration.
(All the lambs lose interest and continue grazing… Pause for another few seconds)
“What about you BaBa?” asks Jeffy Lamb.
“Ummm”, says BaBa as he ponders the question. “I don’t know, but my mommy says that if I eat too much, when I grow up I’ll be a seat cover.”
The lights fade and then come up to reveal Joseph and Mary settling in to their humble accommodations.
“Mary, I’m so thankful that God has provided a place for us, I had all but given up. I do wish it was a little nicer though, for your sake,” Joseph said.
“This is fine Joseph. (Picking fleas from the straw). It is warm and sheltered from the rain, and the straw will be comfortable to sleep on.” (Suddenly Mary, feeling labor pain, bends over and sits – the baby is coming!)
Wonderful Child
“Mary!” Joseph says, “What’s Wrong?”?”
“It is time! The baby is on His way!” Mary told Joseph.
“Let me help you lie down.” (Joseph takes Mary’s arm and leads her into a corner of the stable and out of sight)
(All singers begin to sing Wonderful Child. (Music Disk track 5) Animals slowly come from all over and gather around the manger scene from both sides of stage. Shepherds enter last, but long before the end of the song. Be very careful with the positioning of each actor during this song and the next. If well staged, the audience will not be able to see the baby Jesus when Joseph and Mary bring Him out and lay Him in the manger at the end of Wise Men)
What causes all the different animals to come?
Old owl, cuddly sheep, gather close around.
Something so wonderful must be on the way.
A low star shines brightly, reflecting off the hay.
Wonderful Child.
Who causes all the different animals to come?
Donkeys and camels are watching without sound.
Angels watch over the miracle below.
The rooster is silent & holding back his crow.
Wonderful Child.
He’ll save us all,
He’ll save us all.
Something so wonderful must be on the way.
A low star shines brightly, reflecting off the hay.
Wonderful Child.
He’ll save us all,
He’ll save us all,
He’ll save us all.
“Look over there!” cried the shepherd, “Some men are coming!” (Pointing of into the dark at the approaching lights, being held by the Wise Men who are beginning to come down the aisle from the back of the auditorium).
“Yes!” agreed the other shepherd, “They look like those Wise Men that you heard of. The ones searching for the King.”
“Perhaps they have found Him,” said the first shepherd.
Wise Men
In this intimate moment of birth, the wonder of Christmas will surround you and move audiences with the beauty, power and simplicity of the birth of Jesus. Perfect for solo or duets, the tender first verses portray the mystery of God’s humble plan that grows to save all of creation! “Wise Men” perfectly sets the wonder of the Christ’s birth. Oh, just wait until you hear your children sing it!
One by one, they traveled far,
seeking rest towards the star,
Bearing gifts for all to see,
for the tiny baby.
How could these Wise Men know,
for this one child, the worlds a glow.
Myrrh and spice, on silver trays,
gold and silk where he will lay.
Gifts of love to Him they raise,
long they traveled just to gaze.
God’s plan begins so small,
And grows until all darkness falls.
Ah, Christmas is born,
Ah, Christmas is born,
Ah, Christmas is born
“And that is how Christmas first happened little mousies, and how God sent his own Son to save man,” Papa Mouse told all the little mice.
“Why did Jesus have to come?” Asked Marsha
“Because God loved men so much that He sent Jesus to live with them, so He could restore the relationship men lost by their disobedience.” explained Papa Mouse.
“How did He restore it?” asked Missy.
“When Jesus grew up He was hated by the very people that He came to save, because He was just like God. So they nailed Him to a wooden cross and killed Him.” said Papa.
“Wasn’t God angry?” asked Marvin.
“Actually, said Papa, it was just what needed to happen. Jesus was the only man who was without sin, so God accepted His death in place of the death of mans, who have all sinned.”
“But after He lay dead in the tomb three days, Mama Mouses added, God raised Him up and now He is alive for evermore!”
“What do men have to do to be saved?” Marsha wanted to know.
“All they have to do is believe in Jesus with all their hearts as Savior and Lord, and obey His commands. It’s that simple!” answered Papa
All The World
All of creation will praise the Lord! And what a better time to celebrate than at the birth of Jesus! Finally, all the world can learn to love each other and God, the way He intended! All the World captures the wonder and joy of children and animals who love to celebrate the Lord!
What a wondrous thing the Lord has done,
What amazing things the Lord has done.
All the world is changed by one small child.
Let the bells across the land all ring,
let the children of the world all sing.
For this child of God is King of Kings.
All the world can see His love,
Hope that’s come down from above.
Finally all the world can love.
Finally all the world can love.
“That was a wonderful story, Papa!” said Marsha.
“The best story ever!” Missy sleepily agrees.
“Yes, the best story ever.” agreed Marvin.
Christmas Lullaby
“You’re right”, agrees Mama Mouse, “It is the best story, because it’s true!”
(Mother Mouse sings the first verse of Christmas Lullaby as a solo and then all of the cast joins her for the remainder of the song).
Our journey ends with all the little mouse children falling fast asleep around Mama and Papa Mouse, as all the animals and choir sing Christmas Lullaby. This song which was introduced at the beginning of the musical, is used here as the theme for the whole evening. Intimate, tender, and powerful is its impact on all who hear it, this wonderful song takes us back to a time when Christmas was filled with wonder, anticipation and a restful sense of peace that can only come from above.
Close your eyes, rest for awhile,
take a journey with me.
To a cool night, scattered with starlight,
one shines brighter than all.
As we draw near, lost is all fear,
somehow we know all our dreams can come true.
Softly praising, Wise Men raising,
Precious gifts to the one they do love.
Christmas lately,
means much more to me.
A little baby,
born to set us free.
In all my ways, how can I say,
that this small child has grown to be king.
Once we held him, covered and warmed him,
knowing soon that Christmas He’d bring.
Christmas lately,
You’re much more to me.
A tiny baby,
come to set me free,
set me free
Christmas, lately, means much more to me!
